Cape Town Masters Chess Challenge – Update to tournament regulations (15 November 2024)

We have received a number of requests for exceptions to allow players with ratings below 1800 to participate in the Masters Challenge Section. The LOC has considered these requests and resolved to only approve the following three exceptions, upon request from affected players to play-up in the Masters Challenge Section:

1. Any player with a FIDE/Chess SA rating of at least 1750 (within 50 rating points of Masters Challenge Section).

2. Junior players (U20) & female players with a FIDE/Chess SA rating of at least 1700.

3. Any player whose FIDE/Chess SA rating was above 1800 in the past 12 months but has dropped below 1800.

The tournament regulations will be updated in respect of these allowed exceptions.

Please note that the rating criteria for the Advanced section remains as FIDE/Chess SA ratings between 1400 and 1799 and players not meeting the criteria for the Masters Challenge Section or who do not choose to play-up into the Masters Challenge Section in accordance to the allowed exceptions, must register for the Advanced section.
