The Western Cape Chess Association hosted an online chess tournament on Heritage Day (24 September 2020) to support and raise funds for The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA – West Coast branch). The tournament boasted a prize fund of R5,000 which was proudly sponsored by Club Mykonos Langebaan. The chess community came together and helped raise over R4,000 to help bring hope to many that are affected by cancer!

Steinitz Division
The Steinitz Division comprised a Blitz tournament (3+2) and was won by CM Keith Khumalo who was the only unbeaten player over 11 rounds. Second place went to Providence Oatlhotse ahead of third place FM Joseph Mwale who edged out FM Banele Mhango on tie-break. Kenny Willenberg took the last cash prize on tie-break.

Combined Lasker & Capablanca Section (Chessa rating 1500 and above)
The combined Lasker & Capablanca Division comprised of 5 rounds of Rapid (15+0) and was won by Minenhle Junior Mncwabe who finished on 4.5 points. Andre Rhode came second on 3.5 points and Geriant Segelaar came third on tie-break.

Combined Euwe & Alekhine Section (Chessa rating between 1100-1499)
The combined Lasker & Capablanca Division comprised of 5 rounds of Rapid (15+0) and was won by Rojan Jameson who was unbeaten on 4.5 points. Second place went to Ayanda Nyubusewho on tie-break ahead of Alen Jameson who both finished on 4 points.

Botvinnik Division (Chessa rating below 1100)
The Botvinnik Division comprised of 5 rounds of Rapid (15+0) and was won by Sipho Mlenzana who was unbeaten but whose account had violated the Lichess terms of service during the tournament. Second place went to Koena Mokoena on tie-break who finished equal with third place Philasande Nkatana and two other players on 4 points.
